Fifteen-year evolution of the crustal surface displacements in a reference to the recent East Anatolian earthquakes

Abstract

The study analyzes the accumulated horizontal (internal) and vertical displacements of the earth’s crust in Eastern Anatolia in connection with the region’s largest earthquakes in 2010, 2020 and 2023. The study used the results of continuous daily GNSS measurements of the TUSAGA-Aktif network (Turkey) [Kurt et al., 2020] over an interval of more than 13 years. Synoptic analysis of the evolution of vectors and displacement isolines made it possible to see the following features.

Before the first strong earthquake Elazig M6.1 (2010), weak subsidence of about 2 cm accumulated at its epicenter.

Before the second strong event Elazig, Malatya, a minimum of vertical displacements of <2.5 cm formed in the area of the future epicenter and horizontal displacements of up to 10 cm accumulated.

The subsidence zone began to spread to the north-west and south-west into the area of future catastrophic seismic events in February 2023. These events formed an area of uplifts of up to 8 cm and horizontal displacements of up to ~1 m. They demonstrated sinistral shear along the axis of the East Anatolian Fault. The area of uplift coincided with the area of horizontal extension (dilatation deformation) ~2×10-6.

It should be noted that the accumulated horizontal and vertical displacements of the earth’s surface react slightly to the seismic process, compared to deformations.
